Description

The Laboratory Genetic Counselor I will be responsible for providing genetic counseling services in a molecular diagnostic laboratory environment. Duties include assessment, interpretation, and reporting of laboratory diagnostic testing results and client services (ie. coordination/ordering of tests, answering of laboratory related questions, and assisting in pre-authorization process). The qualified individual will also be able to obtain medical and family histories, review pertinent medical records, and assist in curation of gene/variant databases used to accurately interpret variants identified during testing. In addition, the Laboratory Genetic Counselor I may aid in the update of existing tests as well as help optimize the utilization of molecular testing in clinical management and care. Master's degree from an ABGC/ACGC accredited genetic counseling training program. Board certified or eligible.

Functional Accountabilities

Clinical Laboratory Services
. Provides basic provider services (e.g. follow-up phone calls, requests information or repeat specimens, etc.)
. Obtain medical and family history of patients,review pertinent medical records, and incorporate findings into molecular testing results.
. Aids in evaluating and reporting of molecular testing results, including gene curation, literature review, and variant interpretation.
. Perform risk assessment relevant to the pattern of inheritance pertinent to the specific disorder(s) that have been molecularly diagnosed in the family, and review recurrence risks for at-risk family members.
. Maintains knowledge of current literature and recommended guidelines for reporting molecular testing results.
. Aid in the development and utilization management of genetic testing.
. Provide appropriate verbal and written information regarding test progress and results to providers.
. Respond to provider and/or patient's questions/concerns in a timely manner.
. Aid in updating and maintaining standard operating procedures in adherence with clinical laboratory licensing entities (e.g. CAP, CLIA, etc.)
. Aid in updating and maintaining provider-centric request forms (e.g. requisition, reanalysis requests, etc.)

Patient Services
1. May direct patient’s phone calls to the appropriate provider.
2. Provide up-to-date information regarding new or alternative clinical testing options as they relate to patient care.

Education
1. Communicate with mentor regarding progress and expectations on a monthly basis.
2. Assists with generation and periodic updates of informational materials
