Description

Performs all technical processing procedures and routine quality functions related to the Stem Cell Processing Laboratory. Technical processing areas include product characterization, graft manipulation, cryopreservation and storage. Quality functions include quality documentation, adherence to current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), current Good Tissue Practices (cGTP) and laboratory quality control practices.


Performs cell manipulation/evaluation procedures such as stem cell and/or cellular product cyropreservation, cell enrichment and/or purging, cell evaluation and sorting, cell culture, cell product thaw/wash and infusion. Performs calculations infusion cell doses, viabilities, dilutions and cell concentrations. Responsible for aseptic handling of products. Performs procedures and maintains accurate documentation in compliance with the regulations. Follows procedures/policies implemented by study sponsors and adheres to all defined processing and documentation requirements. Maintains knowledge regarding donor evaluation, screening and testing, labeling and product acceptability and release criteria.

Performs cryopreservation procedures used to store Stem Cell products used for patient transplantation. Performs thawing procedures used for Stem Cell infusion. Performs all procedures in compliance with written SOPs and FACT, AABB and FDA regulations.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs stem cell processing, cryopreservation and reinfusion procedures in compliance with written SOPs and regulatory requirements.
  • Utilizes standard laboratory equipment and records and checks results for completeness and accuracy.
  • Maintains the theoretical and procedural knowledge necessary to perform and interpret assigned procedures performed within the Laboratory.
  • Prioritizes work and provides prompt and efficient service.
  • Practices quality control methods common to area of expertise.
  • Performs data entry of product testing information.
  • Participates in quality assurance program, performs competency testing when assigned by the Supervisor.
  • Develops and maintains skills in order to provide coverage as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Calculates product counts and reviews for accuracy and completeness before reporting.
  • Notifies supervisor of unusual results or discrepancies.
  • Attends meetings as required.
  • Maintains a positive image when dealing with department personnel and other City of Hope employees.
  • Takes call on weekend and as needed to provide coverage for the department.




Qualifications

Minimum Education:
Bachelor's in Medical Technology or equivalent related field of science ( Required)

Minimum Experience:
1 year- Experience in an accredited clinical laboratory ( Required)


Licenses/Certification:

Registry or eligible as MT(ASCP)


Required Skills/Knowledge:

Math Ability Level: Statistics preferred.

Good interpersonal and communication skills important

Knowledge and skills related to LIS desirable.


Functional Accountabilities

Technical Performance


Perform routine technical procedures as assigned following standard operating procedures.

Perform tests accurately in an organized and efficient manner .

Keep up-to-date with procedure updates.

Demonstrate competence in assigned areas.

Serve as a technical resource for Medical Lab Technicians and Laboratory Associates.


Test Results


Report tests accurately in writing, orally and/or in the LIS; demonstrate knowledge of LIS.

Follow established guidelines for reporting ST A T results and critical values, properly documenting calls.

Credit tests appropriately using correct workload exclusion codes.

Review testing logs and complete tests within shift


Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting


Perform equipment and instrument maintenance according to protocols.

Follow recommended manufacturer's and/or department defined instrument performance checks and calibrations prior to testing.

Troubleshoot and resolve basic instrument malfunctions following written guidelines.

Make adjustments or minor repairs with the aid of instrument manuals or technical service by telephone.

Assist Medical Lab Technician in resolving problems.

Monitor supply inventories in assigned areas to assure adequate availability; receive and stock supplies.


Quality Control


Perform, evaluate and report QC protocol; identify and resolve QC failures; document resolutions.

Assist ML T and LA with unresolved problems.

Perform competency and proficiency challenges in a timely manner.

Responsible for efficient and cost effective use of supplies and reagents.
