Description

The Clinical Perfusion Scientist will provide clinical, logistical and research support for the Cardiovascular Surgery programs. The Perfusion Scientist will operate cardiopulmonary perfusion equipment during any medical or surgical situation where it is necessary to support a patient's cardiorespiratory function; as well as operate cell saver equipment during surgical procedures and provide advanced technical services such as ventricular assist device and/or ECMO.

Bachelor's Degree - Required
Master's Degree- Preferred

Certification

Certified Clinical Perfusionist by the American Board for Cardiovascular Perfusion -Required


Functional Accountabilities

Professional Practice
1. Conduct extracorporeal circulation during bypass surgery and other procedures under the direction of a physician.
2. Maintain ongoing communication with surgeons, anesthesiologists and nursing personnel in order to select equipment/supplies and establish perfusion.
3. Record patient data, perfusion parameters, equipment and materials used and other required information in patient medical record in accordance with established documentation standards.

Patient Care
1. Assess a patient’s needs to determine the appropriate extracorporeal support.
2. Formulate a plan for the delivery of appropriate perfusion support; implement the delivery of perfusion support.
3. Monitor physiologic indicators to ensure a successful perfusion support outcome; Manipulate perfusion support to ensure optimum patient care.
4. Administer (on prescription or by standard accepted protocol), via the extracorporeal circuit, blood products, anesthetic agents or medications.
5. Assemble and operate cell saver systems during appropriate surgical procedures.
6. Operate the cardiopulmonary bypass pump and blood gas ISE analyzer.

Logistics
1. Participate in the maintenance of the perfusion team stock of disposable supplies.
2. Utilize available resources to maintain the Perfusion Team’s equipment.
3. Bill patients for Perfusion Services, accurately
4. File case records and billing information, accurately.

Research
1. Foster research through innovations; assisting the cardiac services with research development when it comes to staffing and support.
2. Participate in studies to investigate human or animal disease, preventive methods, and treatments for disease.
3. Set up, calibrate, clean and perform routine maintainence on specialized laboratory equipment.
