Pediatric Education Specialist - (21000268)
Description The Children's National Health System currently teaches approximately sixty American Heart Association (AHA) courses each year including Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) provider, PALS renewal, PALS instructor, PALS HeartCode and Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS). A staff member is needed to provide instructor support to fifty instructors who teach with the program as part-time employees. As an AHA affiliate Children's National is required to provide instructor updates at least every two years, develop and maintain instructor resources, and maintain equipment to support the learning objectives for the course including psychomotor skills, patient assessment, and teamwork and communication.
Qualifications Minimum Education
Associate's Degree Associate Degree or equivalent training. Bachelor's degree preferred. .
Minimum Work Experience
2 years At least 2 years of related clinical experience. At least 1 year pediatric experience preferred. .
Required Licenses and Certifications
Department of Health certification as an EMS Instructor within the first 6 months of hire .
AHA Course Support
- Serve as a lead instructor for PALS and PEARS courses including to set up skill stations, deliver core lectures, rotate skill stations, and oversee the instructors on site.
- Maintain the inventory of equipment for PALS and PEARS courses, including supplies for high fidelity simulation.
- Provide administrative support and schedule courses, assist with course registration and mantain the instructor schedule.
- Maintain instructor resources for PALS, PEARS and outreach courses, including to create/revise teaching scenarios, checklists for equipment set up and maintenance, and instructor notes.
- Maintain the PALS instructor files.
- Create and maintain CE credits for PALS, PEARS and outreach courses.
- Apply for and administer grant funding to support the purchase of additional teaching equipment.
- Support outreach education efforts to include to develop a speaker's bureau.
- Serve as an instructor for courses at regional EMS training academies.
- Assist with curriculum development and scheduling of outreach activities.
- Participate to provide direct patient care through assigned clinical shifts, assignments with orientee and to assist with high acuity or high volume of calls.
- Perform assessments related to overt and subtle needs as evidenced by: making proficient clinical assessments, to identify continuity of care issues, interpreting abnormal lab data and anticipating problems associated with changing patient status
- Participates to plan by judicious, careful and deliberate goal setting designed to assist the patient and family in meeting their needs and to provide leadership to develop the plan of care during ALS (delta) transports in the absence of a nurse or physician team leader.
- Implement the care plan and initiate and complete the actions necessary to meet assessed needs of the patient and family and independently perform and coordinate activities to execute the plan of care during transport.
- Evaluate the plan of care through goal directed and recurrent appraisal to determine the patient and family responses.
- Act as a role model for the evaluation of patient care and analyze the patient and family physical and emotional responses to interventions, verify with the patient and family the effects of care and make recommendations to revise the plan of care.
- Assist with assessing the educational needs of the department and develop an annual educational plan.
- Assist with prioritizing department educational needs as evidenced and incorporate needs into the unit educational plan and identify ways to meet educational needs and time frames.

- Coordinate and/or provide educational offerings/projects for staff based on educational plans
- Assist with evaluating the effectiveness of educational plan to meet the department’s educational needs and make recommendations for change.
