Description

This postion is in the Send Outs department in the Clinical Laboratory. This role is responsible for processing and packaging the specimens being sent to various reference labs that Children's National Hospital uses for outside testing. Great customer service skills and attention to detail are needed for this postition. There are phone calls, faxes and emails to be sent out to clinical staff regarding information needed or updates of results, so these two skills are emphasized with this position. Additionally there is frequent communication with the reference labs themselves.The work is largely independent though the person needs to be a team player because there is a lot of interaction with both internal and external customers.

Qualifications

Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree Bachelor's in Medical Technology or equivalent related field of science (Required)

Minimum Work Experience
1 year Experience in an accredited clinical laboratory (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge
Math Ability Level: Statistics preferred
Good interpersonal and communication skills important
Knowledge and skills related to LIS desirable

Required Licenses and Certifications
Registry or eligible as MT(ASCP) (Required)

Functional Accountabilities

Technical Performance

  • Perform routine technical procedures as assigned following standard operating procedures
  • Perform tests accurately in an organized and efficient manner

Test Results

  • Report tests accurately in writing, orally and/or in the LIS; demonstrate knowledge of LIS
  • Follow established guidelines for reporting ST A T results and critical values, properly documenting calls
  • Credit tests appropriately using correct workload exclusion codes
  • Review testing logs and complete tests within shift
  • Assist in resolving specimen problems
  • Monitor supply inventories in assigned areas to assure adequate availability; receive and stock supplies

  • Continuously validate and verify information needed for decision making or documentation
  • Stop in the face of uncertainty and takes time to resolve the situation
