Description

The Clinical Engineer will participate in various levels of medical equipment selection, installation, setup, and disposition of medical equipment. H/She will participate and coordinate necessary equipment issues during construction projects to assure that the necessary equipment is included in the project, specified to architect, purchased, installed, and setup appropriately. Will demonstrate project leadership abilities (independently) to manage the process through a timeline, communicate status, and follow through on commitments. Independently create and design the medical equipment solution with the clinical provider and carry it through to implementation. H/She will provide consultation and training to clinical staff in the area of medical equipment application, usage and areas in which alternative applications are possible to improve care. Provide clinical application training on a variety of devices to train physicians and nurses in the appropriate use of equipment. This will include training in critical care areas, acute care areas, and operating room settings. Will plan safety solutions for medical equipment to reduce the risk of operator errors or future application errors. At times - Will provide advanced technical expertise to the biomedical engineering department in the area of equipment operation, repair, design, and application for complicated systems such as physiologic monitoring network, nurse call or EEG system. H/She will manage the vendor maintenance and preventative maintenance for devices that cannot be serviced by the inhouse biomedical equipment technicians. H/She will manage the safety program including recall / alert management & follow up, incident review and follow up, and IT security/cybersecurity reviews and assessments.

Qualifications
Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree Engineering - Specifically in biomedical engineering or electrical engineering - see below experience requirements associated with a BS degree (Preferred) Or
Vocational Education Two year vocational/technical degree is equivalent with necessary work experience to demonstrate proficiency in the areas described - - see below experience requirements associated with an AA degree (Required)

Minimum Work Experience
1 year With a BS degree or higher in an Engineering discipline - Prior experience as a practicing engineer in a health care environment as a vendor or an internal employee (managing medical equipment maintenance, installations, safety, lifecycle replacement, IT setup, and IT security). (Preferred) Or
20 years With an AA degree - 20 + years experience as a Biomed technician - troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing medical equipment with specific experience setting up complex networks and device integrations. In addition - experience with managing installations of equipment to include training end users, coordinating necessary supplies/disposables, assuring necessary construction and IT requirements met, and communicating a project timetable to impacted users throughout the project. (Required)

Functional Accountabilities
Project Management
  • Participate and coordinate necessary equipment issues during construction projects to assure that the necessary equipment is included in the project, it is specified to architect, purchased, installed, and setup appropriately .
  • Participate in various levels of medical equipment selection, installation, setup, and disposition of the medical equipment.
  • Communicate and follow up on responsibilities as assigned during the construction phases.
  • Stay current in construction codes and standards related to medical equipment.
  • Stay current in the area of medical equipment technology to provide consultative services to departments.
  • Manage the medical equipment maintenance (repair and preventative maintenance) for devices with the manufacturer or a qualified vendor when there are not internal resources within department to repair with their own hands.
Design
  • Design medical equipment solutions; may be integrations of different devices; modifications to current devices, new devices, or modifications to accessories on current devices.
  • Work within safety and risk parameters to assure design will ensure patient safety.
  • Communicate the status of requests, progress, and timelines to all parties involved.
  • Independently create and design the solution with the clinical provider and carry it through to implementation.
  • Manage the device integration and system management necessary to connect multiple devices together or connect them to third party networks and software.
Training
  • As new technology avails itself, coordinate necessary training with clinicians to assure best utilization of equipment is in place.
  • Provide consultation and training to clinical staff in the area of medical equipment application, usage and areas in which alternative applications are possible to improve care.
  • Provide advanced technical expertise to biomedical engineering department in the area of equipment operation, repair, design, and application
Maintain Safe Work Area
  • Maintain work area in a safe, clean and orderly manner.
  • Communicate effectively to other biomedical engineering personnel in regard to hazards associated with biomedical equipment testing in the shop.
  • Act as a member of the internal engineering emergency response team.
